Welcome to Year 5
Teacher: Miss Teasdale
Support staff: Mrs Daniels
Here you can keep up to date with what we are up to and which topics we are studying.
This year's class texts will be:
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone
Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief
A Christmas Carol
We will use these books as a guided reading tool during reading comprehension lessons and story time.
The Write Stuff
This year St Francis Xavier will be using The Write Stuff scheme to deliver the Literacy curriculum.
Every few weeks the children will be introduced to a new short story which their writing will revolve around. Each lesson will be about creating quality sentences the children can use in their final Big Write, at the end of each theme.
Here at St Francis Xavier we follow the Cornerstones scheme.
This involves teaching history, art, science, DT, music and computing cross-curricularly through chosen 'Topics'.
Year 5 pupils have now started their swimming lessons, which they will be attending on Tuesdays. These will count as their PE tuition until February. Boys need to wear close fitting (lycra) swimming shorts. Girls need to wear a one piece swimming costume. They prefer children not to wear goggles as this do not teach how to be in the water without.
If your child has an inhaler they will need to ensure they bring it for PE days, and any other excursions or they will not be able to take part.
Please ensure that all clothing has your child's name on it, as a simple way to easily avoid unwanted disruption and loss.
Homework will be sent out every Friday. This will be a set of spellings and a piece of topic homework. These will both be due back Wednesday, when they will do a spelling test. Your child's score will be written on the top of their spellings sheet for them to give back to you.
Reading books and planners are sent home every night and children have the opportunity to change their book every day, when they are finished reading them. Please encourage your child to read and record any reading or on-line home learning in their planner with your signature, so they can be rewarded with house points.
