At St Francis Xavier, Phonics is taught on a daily basis from Foundation Stage through to Year 2. We follow the revisit, teach, practice, apply systematic approach using Read, Write, Inc as its sequence. Children are provided with multiple opportunities to practice and apply their phonics knowledge through the use of phonically decodable texts, carefully matched to the needs of the children.

Our aim at Francis Xavier is for every child to be a reader. We want our children to not only be able to read, but to also enjoy reading and understand what they have read. Through Early reading and Phonics we want all children to make at least good progress, so the children can move onto reading a variety of books and texts as quickly as possible, not holding anyone behind.

Through Read Write Inc, we provide the children with a variety of strategies to decode and read unfamiliar words. We also enable children to be successful blenders, to support their writing and spelling. Overall, giving them the foundations of the skills to be fantastic readers, writers and spellers.
