During this topic the children explored and talked about their experience of welcoming people and being welcomed in our homes and school community. We have made welcome displays to help people feel welcomed when they enter our class.

During our Reveal weeks we looked at how a new baby is welcomed in our church family and how we ourselves were welcomed, looked at pictures and discussed with our family and friends about our own Baptism. The children had a chance to explore artefacts linked to Baptism, act out Baptism with each other using class dolls and dressing up, learnt new songs and talked about the love and joy a new baby brings to a family. At the end of the topic the children were able to recognise some religious signs and symbols used in baptism and some religious words and phrases from the rite.

We have been learning about the sacrament of Baptism. We discussed how the church welcomes a baby through baptism.  We learned that the sacrament of Baptism is an invitation to become a part of God’s family and that being part of God’s family means we belong to the Catholic Faith. Many of us said we had been to the Baptism of our younger siblings and cousins!

This week we role played a Baptism to give us a better understanding of what happens during the ceremony.

The families of the baby stood around the Baptismal font and the priest blessed the baby with holy water saying

” I baptise you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

The godparents were given a lighted candle to represent the light of Jesus that has come into the baby’s life.

We had fun experiencing the Baptism in Nursery!
