Eco Warriors
'Then God said, And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. They will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small.' - Genesis 1:26
At St Francis Xavier we recongise our responsibility as stewards of God's creation to care for the environment. Our Eco-Warrior team work under the guidance of Miss Langston to ensure that as a school we live out Catholic social teaching with regards caring for creation to the very best of our abilities.
As part of Keep Britain Tidy’s annual national clean-up campaign our Eco Warriors took part in the Great British Spring Clean. Litter-picking is a simple action that we can do to make an immediate and visible difference to the environment where we learn and play. We as a school pledged to fill at least one bag full of litter. However, we managed to fill four full bags of litter which is amazing! The Eco Warriors had a great time and were really passionate about cleaning up our local area.
For World Polar Bear Day, the Eco Warriors created a presentation for the whole school to make them aware of the dangers polar bears face and how we can help reduce climate change. The Eco Warriors presented facts and created their own polar pledge for the whole school to take part in. We each presented to our classes, Upper KS2 presented to EYFS classes and Lower KS2 presented in assembly. We then gave out polar pledge stickers. Our polar pledge is:
I pledge that I will do my best to keep the polar bears safe.
I will try to walk to school every day instead of using my car.
I will use blankets and add more layers if I am cold instead of putting on the heating.
I will only buy food that I need or donate food to the Food Bank to stop food wastage.
I will try to help reduce climate change.
I will try to use less energy.
I promise to keep the pledge to save the polar bears.
Birdwatch is an annual UK-wide citizen science project held every January, inviting people to gather data to support the work of scientists. This simple activity helps identify bird populations and the most common species. We have learnt about this in Picture News and this will help RSPB monitor bird numbers and deduce whether any species are in decline. The Eco Warriors gathered on the field with their clipboards to birdwatching. First, we spread bird feed on the field to attract birds. Then, we wrapped up warm with blankets, used binoculars to see the birds in the trees and completed our research. Finally, we combined our results and added them to the RSPB website.
The children who were successful in their applications and interviews accepted their eco warrior badges in our whole school assembly in front of their peers and families. We wear our badges with pride and cannot wait to start working together to make our school a happy, safe and successful environment.
The children who were successful in their applications are now part of the Eco Warrior team. These children are filled with pride and cannot wait to start working together to make our school a happy, safe and successful environment.
Here are some of the fantastic entries for the Energy Saving Week Competition, the Eco Warriors tasked the children in school to design a poster promoting saving energy. The children were given the passage, 'The earth is Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the water.' Psalm 24:1-2.
The Care for Creation team have been working hard to create an assembly on how to best care for God's creation. The children researched various Bible scriptures that showed the importance of caring for our planet. After creating their presentation, the Care for Creation team worked together to deliver a whole school assembly.
The Care for Creation Team invite you to enter our competition!
As part of energy saving week, we ask that you create a poster focusing on the importance of saving energy to help us look after God's creation.
On your poster please refer to the following scripture quote
“The earth is the Lord′s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.” Psalm 24:1-2
In KS1, the children learnt of ways to care for God's creatures. They designed cosy hibernation dens to keep the animals safe and warm.
Our KS2 children had an inspiring visit from the Doncaster Council team. Together we explored how we can look after God's planet by reusing, reducing and recycling.
Year Three have been reflecting upon what we learnt from our CAFOD workshop and exploring how they can make a change. We have been learning about the importance of recycling and decided to recycle our plastic bottles at school alongside our paper. We are even bringing in any plastic bottles from home!
