Thank you,

Our Learning

RE - Collective Worship

Classical Music

Y1 Marvellous Mathematicians - Addition within 20 using a Ten Frame

Y1 Science - Super Scientists! - Q: What happens to animals in winter?

🧶🪡 Design & Technology! 🪡🧶
We have loved sewing our very own puppets in DT this half term! We are super excited to decorate them and put them into their own roles in our class puppet show!

🧸🪆Pop up museums! 🪆🧸

Within our topic we have been learning all about the difference between old and new toys. We took a virtual museum tour and designed our own junk modelling pop up museum, thinking very carefully about the type of toys that belong in a museum and how they are displayed neatly. We then made labels for each of the old toys and painted/ decorated them.

Shape!
In Maths we have been working hard to recognise and name 3d shapes. We went on a shape hunt and spotted lots of everyday 3d shapes within our environment!

❤️ Remembrance Day ❤️

Thank you to all the children at St Francis Xavier for helping to make our Remembrance service so special. The children in Year 1 shared a beautiful story called ‘Where the poppies now grow’ and created their own poppies which we hung in our playground as our sign of remembrance. ❤️

 ✡️ Multi faith week! ✡️
During multi faith week we enjoyed learning about the religion of Judaism. We listened to the story of Abraham and explored a piece of scripture through creative art work.

Genesis 12:1-3. God promised Abraham “I will give you this land for your descendants. I will make you a great nation and I will bless you. I will make your descendants as many as the stars in the sky” 💫

🧸 Immersive learning 🧸
The toys in our class reader text are so mischievous - they like to play hide and seek when it’s dark! This morning, we entered our classroom to find notes such as ‘getting warmer, cold, hot hot hot, you’re on fire’ which we followed outside… to find our old toys in sneaky hiding places!

Check out our findings…

We love to play hit the button to develop our mathematical fluency!

Local walk 🌍
We went on a walk to explore our local area! We visited 3 focal points during our walk; the local shop, the park and the peterol station. We were provided with the opportunity to make links to our prior learning as we spotted different styles of houses and also some of our friends homes on the route!

🌟🌈 ART! 🖌🌟

In Year 1 we had such fun mixing secondary colours and practicing our circular paintbrush motion in the style of Wassily Kandinsky’s famous art work!

Representations!

We have been developing our number sense by representing numerals within 10 in numerous ways.

 🌈Tricky words! 🌈

In Year 1 we practice to recognise, spell and write tricky words each week. We have built tricky word rainbows, played tricky word races and practice to cover write and check.

These words are so common within our reading and writing and are paramount to achieve fluency and accurate word writing.

Bedtime Prayer 🙏🏼
We wrote a bedtime prayer to God to thank him for our caring for us our families. We also included things that we are grateful of. We shared these prayers with our friends during our liturgical prayer time at the end of the day.

❤️🕯 Family ring sculpture! 🕯 ❤️

We sculptured a beautiful family ring as we discussed ways that we share love towards each other. We took them home with a little tea light to share with our families. Some of our friends suggested that these would be lovely to use during prayer time at home.

🌟 🍃 We love to learn outdoors! 🍃🌟

In Maths we have been exploring numbers within 10. We are able to order numerals to create a number line and identify one more and one less. We are continually working super hard to form our numbers correctly.

Building on our prior knowledge we then designed our very own map and key of our school grounds here at St Francis Xavier!

✨ 🍂 World Poetry Day! 🍂 ✨

 📌 Field work! 🗺

Using a key, we followed a map around our school grounds to discover key features. We returned to the classroom and built a large scale map using Lego and junk modelling resources! We had such fun!

 🐻 Hibernation dens! 🐻

We learnt of ways to care for the animals in our environment. We designed cosy hibernation dens and took part in a fun experiment to find out which den was the most effective!

Our den building inspired us to draw and label our designs.

What is your dream? 💭
We designed our very own dream catchers and wrote about our dreams for Year 1 🌟

What a busy first week of learning in Year 1! We brought an ‘all about me’ bag into school and shared our special belongings with our class. We then used these objects to inspire our writing. It was so lovely to get to know our new friends and teachers. 💓
