Welcome to Year 1, I hope you have had a wonderful half term break and are ready for an exciting half term together! This half term our topic will be 'Travel and Transport' focusing on different modes of transport in our local area and beyond.
Year 1 Spring Two Messages
For World Book Day we started off by introducing everyone and who they have come as. Then we drew along with an illustrator from the Literacy Trust. In Literacy we wrote a description of our characters. Finally, we made bookmarks and read lots of stories together.
Year 1 received the sign of the cross with Ash from our whole school Ash Wednesday liturgy. We then made our own Lenten promises.
We immersed ourselves in the book 'We're going on a Bear Hunt". We read the book and then went outside and went on our own bear hunt through the grass, the mud, the river, the snow and found the bear. Finally, we acted out the book with Michael Rosen who is the author.
Today we had a road safety talk. We followed the story of Mittons the cat and how they had to learn the green cross code. We discussed how to cross a road safely including on zebra crossings and with lolly pop ladies. Then, we discussed if we are on bikes or scooters we need to wear hi vis jackets and helmets to keep safe. Finally, we learnt that when crossing a road we need to stop, look and listen.
Our Learning
We shared our special pictures of the people in our family. We explored who would be in our family and how our family love us and God loves us.
For our first Geography lesson, we explored our school by following a map. We looked at what our school has and how it could be improved. We also explored how keys are used in maps to help us follow it.
In Design and Technology, Year One have been challenged to create a windmill for a mouse. After watching some inspiring videos they started by creating an aesthetically pleasing outer wall for their windmills. They discussed what would attract a mouse to their design over the others. The children then challenged themselves further by cutting out their nets.
