Welcome to Summer 1, I hope you have had a wonderful half term break and are ready for our next exciting half term together! We have loads of exciting and interesting activities to complete this half term, including letter and non-chronological report writing, learning about the seasons, and learning about the United Kingdom!  Thankyou for your continued support and keep checking our page for new information.

Year 1 Summer 1 Messages

• PE is every Thursday afternoon
• Reading books and reading records to be brought to school every day (to be taught to read with staff)
• Homework is sent out every Tuesday and is due in the following Monday. 
• Please look at the class pages links for further information about curriculum/learning for our child this half term 

Our Learning 

We shared our special pictures of the people in our family. We explored who would be in our family and how our family love us and God loves us. 

For our first Geography lesson, we explored our school by following a map. We looked at what our school has and how it could be improved. We also explored how keys are used in maps to help us follow it. 

In Design and Technology, Year One have been challenged to create a windmill for a mouse. After watching some inspiring videos they started by creating an aesthetically pleasing outer wall for their windmills. They discussed what would attract a mouse to their design over the others. The children then challenged themselves further by cutting out their nets.

For our Science topic of Plants Year One explored the different parts of a plant. They each had their own plant that they got to touch and dissect. We felt the petals, the stem, the roots, the soil and the leaves. Then we labelled the different parts of a plant in our books.

Year One had an amazing time at the seaside. We visited the RNLI centre which gave use lots of information about what they do and the different features of the lifeboat. Then we had lunch on the beach and played with buckets and spades in the sand. We had lots of fun and we are excited to learn all about our topic seaside now and then.

Year One had a wonderful Pentecost Party to celebrate the birthday of the church. We made flame hats to reflect the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit.

Year One have been identifying and ordering the 12 months of the year. We linked this to our previous lessons of ordinal numbers by saying which is the 3rd month, etc. We made a paper chain of the months of the year.

Year One loved learning the national anthem and celebrating the coronation of King Charles.

Today we explored quarters. We learnt that splitting something into quarters has to be four equal parts. We split paper, bread and a biscuit into quarters. We also looked at splitting shapes into quarters.

Today we explored halves. We learnt that splitting something into half has to be two equal parts. We split paper, bread and a biscuit into halves. We also looked at splitting shapes in half.

In Year One we have been reading Paddington and for our Literacy journey we tried marmalade and toast and tea just like Paddington in the story!

We have really enjoyed making our own Easter cards for our families and our community. We used watercolours to create a beautiful background behind the cross. "He is not here, he has risen!" Matthew 28:6

We dressed up as what we aspire to be in the future. We had fire fighters, doctors, police officers, teachers and engineers.

Cristian- "I have come as a PE teacher because I like working out."

Daniel- "I want to be scientist to make people better."

Jakob- "I am an astronaut because I want to go to the moon."

Olivia- "I want to be an author to write book for people to read."

❤️ Remembrance Day ❤️

Thank you to all the children at St Francis Xavier for helping to make our Remembrance service so special. The children in Year 1 shared a beautiful story called ‘Where the poppies now grow’ and created their own poppies which we hung in our playground as our sign of remembrance. ❤️

Key Information:

Our PE day is on a Thursday afternoon. However, I would advise that you bring your PE kit in on a Monday and take it home Friday.

Homework and new reading books will be handed out each Friday. Your homework pack will include; handwriting, a maths/literacy task, and spellings to be practiced. 

I would ask that homework is please returned by the following Thursday. A spelling test will take place each Friday.
